What to Do When You Can’t Sleep

Some Simple Solutions To A Sleeping Problem

People of all ages have at one time or another experienced an evening where they just couldn’t seem to get to sleep. Though we would like to think that the classic solution of counting sheep is all we need to fall asleep successfully, it doesn’t always work for everyone. Too many factors go into sleep inhibitions to be cured with such a simple technique. There are, however, a lot of things you can do to help yourself fall asleep. If you are having trouble falling asleep, keep the following in mind and slumbering the night away may not just be a dream.

Want sleep? Manage the Electronics.

Slow down your cerebral activity by turning off or closing any electronics devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones. The light from these devices can awaken certain parts of the brain and make it quite difficult to fall asleep. Furthermore, they offer distractions that will keep your mind racing a mile a minute. Furthermore instead of shutting your brain down and getting some sleep, you’ll likely be distracted with work, social media, or games and apps.

In with the good out with the bad. Breathe Deep and Relax

You will also want to become consciously aware of how tense your body is. Take a second and try to relax every muscle in your body starting from the top down. As you slowly relax your body, take deep and slow breathes to calm down and relax. This can emulate the natural breathing that takes place during the sleep process.  Relaxed breathing takes place place of a stressful day at work or emotional tension which naturally causes our muscles to tense up and this can make it a lot harder to fall asleep.

Consistency. Regulate Your Sleep Schedule

You will also want to make sure that you wake up at the same time every day. Though this may be hard at first – especially if you didn’t get a good rest the night before – regulating your sleep schedule will make it easier to fall asleep in the evenings. Furthermore, it will create a sleep gap. By weathering the storm and having one tiresome day due to little to no sleep the night before, your body will be well-prepared for sleep the following night.

Don’t be a chicken. See Your Doctor

It may sound like a drastic step, but if you haven’t been able to fall asleep for a long time it may be high time to reach out to your physician. It is possible that you have a sleep disorder, and your doctor will be able to help you find non-addictive sleep aids. Just make sure that you don’t abuse alcohol or medications with drowsy side effects because this can harm your health in the long run.

Choose the Right Mattress.

There are a lot of types of mattresses out there, but organic latex mattresses are something to consider. Not only are they comfortable and help to remove pressure points on your spine and joints that older mattresses fail to remove, but organic latex mattresses don’t release chemicals and toxins that other types of bedding release. By sleeping in an environment with toxin-free air year after year, the quality of your sleep will improve.
