How To Stop A Bed Frame From Sliding On Hardwood Floors

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

When you have a steel bed frame on a hardwood floor of any type including hardwood, laminate or tile, the entire bed tends to move and slide on the floor. Hardwood and laminate floors tend to scratch and gouge when a steel frame’s legs slide across it. Not only is it aggravating to deal with a sliding bed frame, but also your repair costs to return the flooring to a new state can be quite costly. A sliding bed can also be dangerous to children who tend to jump into their beds or the elderly, who may lose their balance getting out of bed if it skids. Luckily, there are a few different things you can do to correct this situation.

Re-Position Your Bed

You can move your bed into a corner of the bedroom with the head of the bed and one side butted up against the walls. This will stabilize it by putting pressure on the walls when you get into or out of bed. This may not be possible due to the shape of your room and would not be satisfactory if two people sleep together and have the need to crawl over another to enter or exit the bed. It may not work well with children either, as they can apply great force when jumping into bed and the motion can scrape the walls.

Add Furniture Cups

Rubber furniture cups are available in a variety of sizes and styles. They are available at a very nominal price range and include square and circular shapes. Most of them are 1 ¼ inch to 4 inches in size. You can also choose from clear, white, tan or brown. To install them on a bed frame with legs, you simply raise up the bed and set each leg of the frame, including the center supports if you have them in a cup.

For more assurance that your flooring does not sustain scratches, you can cut a small piece of rubber shelf lining in the same size as the furniture cups and hot glue it to the bottom of the cups for extra bed stability.

If you have casters that roll on your steel bed frame instead of stationary legs, press the locking mechanism down on each one before inserting them into furniture cups. Some bed frames have casters on the four corners and legs on the center supports that may require different sizes and products to make them stationary. So, make sure to measure your legs or casters before you purchase your protective furniture cups.

Add Bed Risers

Bed risers are also a great solution for sliding bed frames. They are available in circular or square shapes with high impact resistant materials in a slight pyramid shape in where the bottom is slightly larger than the top. You can find these at home improvement centers in several sized diameters and heights. The added beauty of placing risers under your bed frames legs or casters is that it gives you valuable storage space of up to six inches underneath the bed.

Under bed storage totes and wire baskets either slide underneath the bed or have wheels to roll under the bed. You can store clothing, shoes or any items under the bed and out of site. The most popular solution for small bedrooms by top interior designers is to use the tallest bed risers and use as many storage bins as you can fit under the bed.
