Top Ten Mattress Myths Debunked – Part II

In “Mattress Myths Debunked Part I,” we discussed five of the top ten mattress myths. Here are five more mattress myths to keep in mind as you shop for your new bed.

When a mattress has poking springs, dips, becomes too soft or doesn’t have the underlying support it once did, many consumers turn to mattress toppers. Many consumers are tempted to use a mattress topper to extend the life of their mattress because they are under the misconception that mattress toppers can fix everything that’s wrong with a mattress. The truth is, mattress toppers are ideal for providing pressure relief on a mattress that’s too firm or for extending the life of one that remains supportive but has lost resiliency in its comfort layers.

When it comes to buying a new mattress and box springs, many consumers are convinced they can get can use their old box springs with their new mattress. There are several reasons why you should buy the matching foundation when you buy a new mattress. If you are switching from a spring mattress to a foam mattress, you’ll need a solid foundation rather than a box spring foundation. Another reason for buying a matching foundation is for the sake of the warranty on the mattress. Many manufacturers stipulate the use of their foundation for warranty coverage.

Another mattress myth when it comes to warranties is the idea that the warranty will cover everything. This is false and some mattress warranties are more complicated than you might think. Though some luxury mattresses feature 20 year warranties or longer, this doesn’t necessarily mean the whole mattress is covered. Much like the tires on your car, even these luxury mattresses have a certain period of full coverage followed by a prorated time period. During the prorated period, certain components or a specific degree of impressions are covered. Odds are, you’ll replace your mattress several years before a 20 year long warranty ends.

When it comes to replacing a mattress, part of the reason why so many people procrastinate is because they are under the false impression that it will take weeks to find the mattress that’s best for them. While it is a good idea to test mattresses in a show room, this should be the last part of your search for a new mattress. The first thing you and your spouse will want to do from the comforts of your home is identify your preferences. Determine if you prefer a soft, medium or firm mattress. Read reviews as well. Before you buy, make sure the mattress you’ve selected has a good return policy. In some cases, manufacturers provide a 90-day trial period. This gives you the best opportunity to be absolutely sure the mattress you’ve purchased is the best one for you.

Finally, many people dread going in to mattress stores because they don’t want to hear any sales pitches. At STLBeds, we have professionally trained mattress experts who have nearly 50 years of industry experience. Our mattress experts are glad to explain in everyday English the differences between all of the mattress categories and let you compare them for yourself in our Test Rest Challenge.
