KTVI Fox 2 News reporter Betsy Bruce announced that the one time locally owned St. Louis Serta licensee will close up shop end of January 2009. Workers stopped mattress production on Tuesday.
The Serta Mattress facility was recently bought out last year. This plant closure will come at a cost of nearly 100 St. Louis union jobs. The furniture and mattress industry have been hit very hard in recent years. As a result this is the second St. Louis mattress manufacturing plant closure in the last year. The other recent closure was the Ackerman Manufacturing Company. They announced that they would close their mattress building facility 5/30/2008 (Spring Air Mattress Of St Louis) which was located at 4140 Park Ave of Grand Ave in, Saint Louis, MO. They employed 36 employees.
On a personal note, I toured the old mattress plant over off of South Hanley Rd. about fifteen years ago. The owners of Sleep Station took me over there for mattress sales training and to see how the beds were assembled. I met some very nice people over there at Serta and personally worked with a couple of the Serta sales representatives who taught me a lot about mattresses. Whether they knew it or not their were in part responsible for our business STLBeds success in selling mattresses and boxsprings, they happen to good people and a good company.
