Read The Difference Between Bed Sizes on the Market Today.
When it comes to shopping for king-size mattresses, things can get confusing. Especially when there are two sizes of king-size beds and four names. A Standard King or Eastern King mattress refers to one type of King size bed while a California King or Western King refers to another type of King size bed. Standard King or Eastern King mattresses are 4” wider than the California King or Western King size mattresses. But the California King or Western King mattress is 4” longer than the Standard King or Eastern King mattress.
The nice thing about a king-size mattress is that it offers two people the same amount of personal sleeping space as they would get in a Twin bed. Pushing two Extra-Long Twin mattresses together comes out to the same dimensions as an Eastern King-size mattress. If you have a guest bedroom with adequate floor space, consider purchasing two Extra-Long Twin mattresses for singles but also for couples as they can be pushed together to make a King size bed.
King-size beds cause additional confusion when it comes to buying sheets. While flat sheets will fit both Standard King and California King mattresses, the fitted sheets are cut to fit one or the other. So, it’s up to you to read the packaging carefully. You’ll also want to measure your King-size mattress before you go to the store so you know which linens will fit your mattress best.
Standard King or Eastern King size mattresses are 16” wider than Standard Queen size mattresses and are the same length. However, a King-size bed has two box springs or frames and one mattress which makes it a lot easier to move than a Queen-size bed with a one-piece box spring and one top mattress that can be quite heavy. At 76” wide and 80” long, a Standard or Eastern King size bed offers 38” of personal sleeping space per person.
But as the widest bed available in stores, the Standard or Eastern King size bed may still not be long enough for taller adults. King-size bedding is the most expensive of all bed sizes and you’ll need 3 standard-size pillows or 2 king-size pillows. Plus, moving king-size mattresses by yourself is difficult if not impossible.
Big and tall and even plus-size adults often opt for the California or Western King size mattress because it is 12” wider than a Queen size mattress and 4” longer. Like the Standard or Eastern King mattress, the California or Western King size bed has one top mattress and two Twin width box springs to make it more manageable to move. For extremely tall adults, sleeping corner to corner on a California or Western King mattress is the only way to enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep.
At 72” wide and 84” long, the California or Western King bed offers 36” of personal sleeping space. Because the California or Western King size mattress is the biggest mattress on the market today, it’s also the most cumbersome to move. In some cases, it may not fit upstairs, through narrow hallways, or in smaller bedrooms. Be sure to know the dimensions of your California or Western King-size mattress before you go shopping for sheets.
